Baked & Wired Ménage à trois Cupcake Review

Baked and Wired is this great local bakery/coffeeshop hidden away in Georgetown, and locals know that it’s the best place for cupcakes in DC. It’s our favorite cupcakery, and so we’ll be attempting to review each of their flavors!

The ‘special’ for Valentine’s Day was the Ménage à trois described on their website as “chocolate cake with cream cheese icing and raspberry filling.”  Alas, we didn’t get any photos, but we have excellent memories of this sexy little event.

FLAVOR ORGY

Kendra’s Thoughts–Chocolate+raspberry is one of my favorite chocolate/fruit combos, so I was pretty psyched!  I knew what to expect from the chocolate cake part from B&W’s past cupcakes (dense and moist) and it went great with the raspberry.  The cream cheese icing is fine, but it didn’t really go that well with the other two flavors–the raspberry offers enough sweet/tart as-is, and I think that flavor-wise (and name-wise) that B&W should have gone with their richer, more intense chocolate ganache frosting. It’s respectable, and I do love filled cupcakes, but I probably won’t get this one again. B-

Kat’s Thoughts–I am glad to see more chocolate-based flavors on the lineup. The raspberry filling is the same as in the Razmanian Devil cupcake. If the icing were the same too, this might have been my perfect cupcake! As is, I don’t think the cream cheese icing is up to par with b&w’s buttercreams and chocolate satins. Compared to those, it tastes flatter and sourer. But overall, it is still a quite rich and tasty cupcake! These are still on sale today, but as a seasonal special it may not be around long. B
